What You Need to Know About NZ's Healthy Homes Standards

    Healthy Homes Assessment

The best way to check if your property is compliant with New Zealand’s Healthy Homes Standards is to get it assessed by one of our well-trained and experienced assessors. We have in-depth knowledge of the regulations and how they apply to your property.

You’ll receive a comprehensive report after we complete the assessment with a competitive quote for any work that is needed to bring your home up to the required standard.

    Insulation

New Zealand’s Healthy Homes Standards specify the minimum level of ceiling and underfloor insulation that should be in your home. Specifically, the insulation in rental properties must either comply with the 2008 Building Code or, if the home is already insulated, the insulation must be at least 120mm thick.

Navigating these regulations can be tricky, but we’re here to help. Book a Healthy Homes Assessment now.

    Heating

According to the Healthy Homes Standards, rental homes must have a fixed heating device in the main living room. This heating device must be capable of heating the room to at least 18°C. The heating device must also meet other requirements, including being efficient and affordable to run.

    Ventilation

Effective ventilation is crucial to ensure homes are safe and healthy to live in. The specific requirements include having windows or doors that can be opened to let in fresh air. Appropriately sized extractor fans are also required in kitchens and bathrooms.

At Panda Solutions, we can carry out an assessment of the ventilation in your rental property. We can also complete any work to ensure compliance, including installing new extractor fans.

    Moisture Ingress & Drainage

Keeping homes dry is one of the priorities of NZ’s Healthy Home regulations. To comply with these standards, your rental property must have sufficient drainage to direct rainwater away from the property. If it has an enclosed subfloor, there should also be a ground moisture barrier if it is possible to install one.

Contact us today to arrange an assessment that includes checking if your home complies with moisture ingress and drainage standards.

    Draught Stopping

Draughts make homes cold and energy inefficient. As a result, rental homes must be free from unreasonable gaps or holes around doors and windows, as well as walls, floors, and ceilings. Unused fireplaces and chimneys must also be blocked.

Our healthy homes assessment includes checking your home for draughts. We can also complete any work required to eliminate draughts and make the property more comfortable and cheaper to heat.
