Polyester Insulation

Polyester insulation is typically made from recycled materials, so it also has eco-friendly credentials. It doesn’t offer the same thermal performance as glass wool insulation, but it is still an effective choice for keeping your home warm. Also, unlike glass wool insulation, chemicals are not used to manufacture polyester insulation.

Polyester insulation won’t cause irritation if you come into contact with it and it doesn’t produce breathable fibres, making it a good choice if you have allergies. It can be a bit trickier to install as it is not as easy to cut as glass wool insulation.

Glass Wool Insulation

Glass wool insulation, also known as fibreglass insulation, is one of the most common types of insulation used in New Zealand homes. It is made from recycled glass so helps the environment by re-using a waste material. It is also a high performing insulation, delivering excellent thermal performance, and it is non-combustible.

The cons include the fact that chemicals are often used to bond the materials, while glass fibres can cause irritation to the skin or eyes if you come into contact with them.

FAQs

We install a full range, including glass wool and polyester batts and segments for ceilings, walls and floors, blown-in ceiling insulation, and ground moisture barriers. In addition to standard residential insulation, we also install a variety of insulation systems for commercial buildings. The best choice depends on the area being insulated, your budget and whether you’re meeting Healthy Homes or Building Code requirements. We’ll talk you through the options at your free assessment.

Both are excellent insulation and meet the standards, so it often comes down to preference and budget. Glass wool is cost-effective and widely used. Polyester contains no glass fibres, so it’s non-irritating and easy to handle, which makes it popular for homes where allergies or sensitivity are a concern. We’ll recommend the best fit for your home.

Yes. Polyester insulation is made without glass fibres, so it doesn’t itch or irritate skin and lungs the way some older products could, and it’s generally considered safe to handle. It’s a great option if anyone in the home has allergies or sensitivities.

For reducing noise, denser acoustic batts work best, fitted in internal walls and between floors. They absorb sound and cut the noise that travels between rooms or levels. If a quieter home is your goal, let us know and we’ll recommend a product suited to acoustic performance rather than just thermal.

There’s no single best product, it depends on the area you’re insulating, your budget, and whether you’re meeting Healthy Homes or Building Code standards. A higher R-value always means better performance for a given space. The simplest way to decide is a free home assessment, where we’ll match the right product to each part of your home.
